Transportation

How do students get to and from Lively?

AISD Transportation Department provides transportation for any Magnet Program student who lives two or more miles from Lively. For information about transportation, please call AISD Transportation (512-414-0238) or go to the Transportation Department website: https://www.austinisd.org/transportation. In addition to using the school buses, some families organize carpools.

Is transportation available for students who stay for after-school activities?

Late buses leave Lively at 5:30 p.m. Monday -Friday for students who stay after school for tutoring or for after school activities. Late buses are organized by area of town, therefore students need to know their home addresses and what schools their house are nearest. Students are given a late bus pass by the teacher of their particular activity. Students must live 3.5 miles away from Lively or farther to qualify for late buses. These bus routes are tied to the student's regular bus routes.

Extracurricular Activities

What types of after-school activities are available for Fulmore students?

Lively offers many athletic, fine arts, academic, and social extracurricular activities. Students may participate in U.I.L. football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and track and field competitions once they are in 7th grade. Lively also has a wide variety of after-school clubs such as: Mine Craft, Drone/Robotics Club, Library Club, Science, Club Gen, Chill Zone, Gifted & Talented, Quiz Bowl, Jazz Band, National Junior Honor Society, History club, and others.

Is Physical Education (P.E.) required every year in middle school?

Students must take two semesters of physical education/functional fitness in 6th grade. Seventh and eighth graders must take one semester of P.E. in each grade.

What is a P.E. waiver?

A 7th or 8th grader who is interested in taking extra electives may try to place out of P.E. by obtaining a waiver. This requires meeting the P.E. requirement outside of school. Only certain activities are allowed and providers must be registered with the district's P.E. department. Waiver forms are processed by the district and can be downloaded from: https://www.austinisd.org/pe-health.

Academic Expectations & Supports

What courses are required?

All students take 8 classes per semester. Students will take four year-long courses in the following core academic subject areas: English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students must also take physical education classes (A full year in 6th grade, one semester in 7th & 8th). All 6th grade magnet students are required to take Introduction to Law, and Introduction to Humanities. Each of these courses is one semester. Students are also required to take a semester of fine arts and a semester of keyboarding during their middle school career.

How many electives may a student take?

The number of electives a student takes depends on on how many required courses they are taking per semester. Some electives are a semester long, while others are a year long. Most of our fine arts electives as well as all of our foreign language courses are year long.

How much homework should students expect?

Home practice is an important part of being successful as a magnet student however, we take a balanced approach. An estimate of one to two hours a night is a good expectation however, this depends on the levels of classes the student is taking. Magnet students will sometimes have projects or home work over the weekend.

What academic help is available to Lively students?

Lively has an excellent and structured teacher tutoring schedule after school. All core areas designate one afternoon a week for tutoring. Teachers are available from 3:34-4:30 p.m. Many of our teachers tutor extra afternoons or work with students during lunch or before school as well.

Lively Community

Is my child safe at Lively?

Lively's discipline and safety records are available from AISD. Our faculty and security monitors are on duty before and after school, during passing periods, and during lunch. Lively students report feeling safe on campus. Lively was one of the first middle schools in Austin to become a No Place For Hate campus and is invested in social-emotional learning that we implement through our SEL classes every morning after breakfast in the classroom.

What social supports are available? Will my child make new friends?

Lively magnet students transfer from schools all over the city, leave their feeder patterns, and form a new community. Our students work collaboratively in classrooms and in their extracurricular activities which makes finding friends easy. We also encourage new students to attend our transition camp the first week of August to start the process of becoming a Lively Falcon.

Transfers

How does a student obtain a transfer to the Magnet Program?

Once accepted into the program, the Magnet Office obtains the necessary transfers for students. Students who have requested a transfer to another middle school will need to notify the transfer office to cancel that request.
